Chlamydia: symptoms, treatment, and recovery

The most commonly reported bacterial STI in the U.S. — and one of the most curable. A clear-eyed guide to testing, treatment, and what comes next.

Chlamydia is curable. A short course of doxycycline (or single- dose azithromycin) clears the infection in nearly all cases. The problem is that 70%+ of chlamydia infections show no symptoms — which is why the CDC recommends annual screening for sexually active women under 25 and anyone with new or multiple partners.

Untreated, chlamydia is one of the leading preventable causes of infertility — primarily through pelvic inflammatory disease. Caught early and treated, it rarely causes long-term harm.

This page is the home of our chlamydia coverage. Symptoms, testing, treatment, recovery, and complications — all medically reviewed.

What chlamydia is

Chlamydia (Chlamydia trachomatis) is the most commonly reported bacterial STI in the U.S. It is curable with antibiotics — but most infections show no symptoms, which is why screening matters.

Symptoms — including oral and unusual presentations

Most chlamydia infections are silent. When symptoms do appear, they vary by infection site (genital, rectal, throat). These articles cover the unusual presentations doctors sometimes miss.

Treatment and recovery

Chlamydia is curable. First-line therapy is doxycycline (or azithromycin in some scenarios). Here is what to expect during and after treatment.

Complications — infertility and PID

Untreated chlamydia is one of the leading preventable causes of female infertility, primarily by causing pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). Early treatment prevents this.

Frequently asked questions

Is chlamydia curable?+

Yes. Chlamydia is a bacterial infection and is fully curable with antibiotics. First-line treatment is a 7-day course of doxycycline; in specific scenarios (pregnancy, expedited partner therapy), a single dose of azithromycin is used. Recheck testing 3 months later is recommended.

How soon after treatment can I have sex again?+

Wait 7 days after starting treatment before having sex again, even with a long-term partner. Single-dose azithromycin requires the full 7 days; the multi-day doxycycline course requires waiting until the full 7-day course is complete. Both partners must complete treatment first.

What are the symptoms of chlamydia?+

Most people with chlamydia have no symptoms. When symptoms do appear, they include unusual discharge, burning during urination, pelvic pain, and rectal pain or bleeding. Because most cases are silent, sexually active people under 25 should be screened annually.

Can chlamydia cause infertility?+

Yes, untreated chlamydia can cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) which can scar the fallopian tubes and cause infertility or ectopic pregnancy. This is one of the strongest reasons for routine screening. Treated early, chlamydia rarely causes long-term harm.

Can you get chlamydia from oral sex?+

Yes. Oral sex can transmit chlamydia to or from the throat. Throat chlamydia is often asymptomatic but can cause sore throat. A throat swab is required to detect it — standard urine tests will miss it.

How is chlamydia tested?+

Nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) are the gold standard. They can be done on a urine sample, vaginal swab, or rectal/throat swab depending on exposure site. Results are typically back within a few days. Home test kits are now widely available.

What happens if I do not treat chlamydia?+

Untreated chlamydia can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease in women, infertility, ectopic pregnancy, and chronic pelvic pain. In men, it can cause epididymitis. In all genders, it increases the risk of acquiring HIV. Treatment is simple and effective — there is no good reason to delay.
